Knowledge of Mica

Ⅰ. What is mica?

Mica is the collective name of the mica group of minerals, which are a kind of aluminosilicate minerals with a unique layer-like structure formed under the long-term geological action, monoclinic system. Mica crystals have a layered structure inside, so they are flaky crystals, mainly hexagonal lamellar crystals. The lamellar cleavage is very complete, vitreous, and the flakes are elastic.

Ⅱ. The classification of mica

Mica ore mainly includes biotite, phlogopite, muscovite, lepidolite, sericite, green mica, lepidolite, etc. Aventurine is a mixed mineral of mica and quartz.

The most widely used in industry are muscovite and phlogopite, and lepidolite is an important mineral raw material for lithium extraction.

Ⅲ. The scope of application of mica

Mica sheet uses involve building materials (mica wallpaper, liquid wallpaper, artificial marble, decorative panels, furniture, real stone paint, high temperature friction materials, composite materials), agriculture (agricultural film, fertilizer), coatings, plastics, cosmetics, insulation, ceramics, paper, medicine, etc. multiple fields.

Ⅳ. Examples of functional applications of mica

1. Plastic products

A composite material mixed with thermoplastic resin or thermosetting resin – mica reinforced plastic, is a widely used engineering plastic.

2. Rubber industry

A good lubricant and mold release agent, filled with an appropriate amount of muscovite powder to replace clay and carbon black, is extremely beneficial for improving the quality of rubber products and reducing production costs.

3. Pearlescent pigments

It is a new type of pigment processed by a special process using mica powder with a high diameter-to-thickness ratio and titanium sulfate or titanium chloride solution in a certain proportion.

4. Mica slurry for drilling construction

Increasing the adhesion of mud on the hole wall is conducive to solid wall expansion and reducing the seepage loss of circulating water, which has an excellent effect on improving work efficiency and preventing collapse accidents.

5. Mica anti-corrosion coating

Mica products is an alternative product of zinc-rich paint. This material has good anti-corrosion, anti-aging and noise-absorbing effects, and can be widely used in ship hull anti-corrosion and oil pipeline anti-corrosion.

Today, the demand for flake mica in China will decrease year by year, the demand for tube feeding flake mica will remain balanced, and capacitor chips and thick flake mica will be basically saturated. Natural flake mica is generally replaced by alternative materials. However, as a product of comprehensive utilization of mica, mica paper and mica powder and deep-processed products such as mica insulation products, mica paper electrical appliances, etc. have begun to sell well.
